When You're A Nail, Everyone Looks Like A Hammer

No Editors for Dave Winer, Just Bodyguards:

"Another insidious Internet problem, random people who challenge your integrity. ... The idea is that a public figure would have a committee of three people who vouch for his or her integrity, kind of the role the editor and publisher of a magazine or newspaper plays. If you have an issue with me, take it up with one of my committee members. If they think there's an issue, then I have to take a look at it. This would up the level of discourse in the weblog world substantially. So many of the challenges don't provide any data at all. I am tired of getting these hits. There's almost always two or three people trying to end my career in humiliation. Let them take some risks when they do that. No I don't think it's funny that you think I'm an asshole. Find someone else to pick on." [Scripting News [Emphasis added.]

Humm, it would seem that Mr. Winer identifies a life problem as a just another net problem. We feel your pain, Dave, but if you think a committee is going to solve it, you've been at Harvard much too long. What do you want, a peer-reviewed life?

    SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - TiVo Inc. pioneered digital video recording as a new way of watching television - when you want it. Now it could be TV where you want it, too. The long-awaited service feature called TiVoToGo, set to launch Monday, will give users their first taste of TiVo untethered. No longer confined to TiVo digital video recorders in the living room or bedroom, subscribers will be able to transfer their recorded shows to PCs or laptops and take them on the road - as long as the shows are not specially tagged with copy restrictions. That's also the case for pay-per-view or on-demand movies, and some premium paid programming. Users also will be able to copy shows onto a DVD - soon after but not immediately at the service launch, company officials said.

Then there was the rumour that the US military base at Diego Garcia was forewarned of the impending disaster and presumably because of some CIA-approved plot to undermine Islamic movements in Indonesia and Thailand did nothing about it.

Planned to be twice as long and three times as heavy as the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the Mars Science Laboratory would collect martian soil samples and rock cores and analyze them for environmental conditions and organic compounds that could have supported microbial life now or in the past.
